ABOUT JACOB W. HARVEY

Jacob W. Harvey was born and raised in Sioux Falls, SD. He received his Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in 2015 from Augustana University, where he studied drawing under Scott Parson and the methods of direct stone carving taught by Steve Thomas. Most of Jacob’s early works were freeform, organic abstract sculptures in which his only goal was to release the internal, essential forms of the stone. In the last 10 years, he has carved over 50 sculptures from Colorado alabaster.

Since his time as an undergraduate, Jacob has worked for local sculptor and owner of Bronze Age Art Casting, LLC, Rick Haugen. He worked for the foundry for nearly 10 years, helping create, shape, and patina the works of many local and tri-state artists.

Jacob is now combining the lessons he's learned from carving stone with his extensive knowledge of bronze casting. His process has transitioned into more detailed stone work and multimedia sculpture. He is currently creating mostly representations of human forms, animals, and mythical characters. His ultimate goal is to uncover the “elemental cohesion” between all five sculptural media he has worked with: stone, metal, wood, ceramic, and stained glass.

Most recently, Jacob has reconnected with drawing, reinforcing the connection between 2D and 3D media. In all his current work, he is seeking understanding of our changing world by exploring myth.
